Surf Level Guide

Whether it’s your first time surfing or you’re already catching green waves, we’ll meet you exactly where you are and help you grow from there. Knowing your current surf level helps us tailor your sessions and set clear, achievable goals so you get the most out of your time in the water.

You might share a lesson with one or two other surfers at a similar stage, but we’ll never group you with someone at a totally different level.

Not sure where you fall? No worries. Here’s a little breakdown to help guide you discover your level. Let’s dive in!

Level 1: Beginner

For first-timers or those still finding their feet.

If you’re new to surfing or have only tried it a handful of times, this is your starting point. You’ll be learning the fundamentals - from how to pop up and paddle with purpose.

We’ll kick things off in the forgiving whitewater with the right board for your level, soft waves and a whole lot of encouragement. You’ll also get familiar with basic surf gear, safety essentials and ocean awareness.

This level is also great for anyone returning to surfing after a long break or those who’ve never had formal coaching and want to build a strong foundation.

Level 2: Novice

For surfers building confidence beyond the whitewater.

You’ve spent a bit of time in the water and are beginning to catch some green waves on your own. You’re comfortable popping up, but things still feel a bit hit or miss and you're ready to feel more in control.

At this stage, we’ll focus on improving your paddling, positioning and timing so you can catch more waves with less effort. You’ll learn how to ride along the face, trim with better stance and start exploring gentle turns.

Theory sessions and video analysis will help guide you in reading the ocean more clearly and help build the skills needed to move beyond beginner territory.

Level 3: Intermediate

For surfers ready to turn consistency into progression.

You’re paddling out on your own, catching unbroken waves and riding along the face, but you’re still working on doing it more consistently and with control. You might occasionally need a little guidance with lineup positioning, wave selection, or dialing in your takeoffs. You’ve started experimenting with trimming and basic turns and you’re eager to sharpen your timing, flow and technique.

Together, we’ll refine your paddling, wave reading, and maneuver execution - whether that means better takeoffs, or more confidence with bottom and top turns. Through in-water coaching, theory and video feedback, we’ll help you unlock more flow and freedom in your surfing.

Level 4: Advanced

For surfers ready to elevate their performance.

You’re confident in the lineup, comfortable surfing a range of conditions, taking off from the peak and handling steeper drops. You’re starting to link maneuvers with speed, flow and control.

This level is for those who want to fine-tune their technique and bring more consistency and style to their surfing. We’ll use in-depth technical coaching and video analysis to identify the small details that make a big difference.

No matter where you slot in - popping up for the very first time or polishing off your bottom-turn timing - knowing your level is the fastest route to better waves. Pair that clarity with a coach who’s dialed into San Juan del Sur’s daily conditions and you’ve got a recipe for real, feel-good progress.
